Waingawa Solar Farm - 4.7 MW
The Waingawa Solar Farm is a community-scale solar farm of 4.7 MW capacity, connected to Powerco’s local network, with consent granted in July 2023. It began generating power in early 2025.
The solar farm covers six hectares of an existing 12-hectare rural lifestyle farm in Waingawa, near Masterton in the Wairarapa. The landowner is continuing to graze small animals under the panels and the solar farm lease supplements the family’s income from the farm.
Thousands of solar panels track the movement of the sun across the day and the renewable energy generated will offset electricity from fossil fuels imported into the Wairarapa region. The solar farm produces enough energy to power approximately 1000 homes and helps to power the nearby timber mill.
